Google Nexus 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6: can Google beat the future?

We’re an impatient bunch here at AndroidPIT: while the world is preparing to ooh and ahh over the Google Nexus 6, we want to know how it compares to next year’s Samsung flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S6. Keep in mind, this comparison is purely based on rumors, and nothing more, so take it with a grain of salt. All the same, when gazing into the future of Android, it's interesting to see where we might be in a year and how the smartphones will compare!

Warning: like mentioned above, the article below was written in a lighthearted and ''what if'' manner. For us, thinking about the future of Android and where smartphones will be is exciting and full of promise, hence the reason for writing this article.

It’s safe to say that the reaction to recent Samsung devices has been muted - and that means the next S series phone, the Samsung Galaxy S6, needs to be amazing. The Google Nexus 6 has raised the bar, so what can we expect the next flagship Sammy to have on its spec sheet?

  • All you need to know about the Galaxy S6 and Nexus 6 release date, price and rumors.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: display and screen

The Nexus 6 is expected to have a 5.9-inch QHD display delivering a pixel density of 496 ppi, while the current Galaxy has a 5.1-inch AMOLED with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 432 ppi. We’re fast approaching the point where ppi figures are meaningless, but you can expect Samsung to try and cram as many pixels as possible into its Galaxy S6. We’d expect a bigger screen too.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: design and build quality

Samsung has seen some ground to make up here: its last two Galaxy S phones haven’t been well received by critics and the most recent Galaxy Note has suffered from quality issues such as gaps between the screen and the case. For the Galaxy S6 to be a big hit it needs to look and feel like the premium product Samsung pitches it as. The Nexus 6 looks like the Moto X it’s based on.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: processor and RAM

The processor inside the Nexus 6 is a quad-core Snapdragon 805 clocked at 2.7 GHz, with 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 420 GPU. We’d expect the Samsung Galaxy S6 to match that at least.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: operating system

Both devices will run Android 5.0 L, aka Android Lollipop.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: camera

The Galaxy S5 is already ahead of the Nexus in the camera department: it has a 16 MP model compared to the Nexus’s 13 MP, and it uses phase detection focus for faster and better autofocusing. We all know that beyond a certain point megapixels don’t matter, but if Samsung doesn’t try and hit the 20 MP mark with the Galaxy S6 we’ll eat an Xperia.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: battery

Samsung needs to up the power here, because the 2,800 mAh it’s given the Galaxy S5 pales compared to the 3,200 mAh in the Nexus 6. The Galaxy S6 might need even more if it’s packing a more powerful processor and a denser screen.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy S6: early verdict

Of course it’s far too early to pick a winner, because only one of the devices officially exists. We might as well try to compare the Nexus with a piece of toast, or against a crayon drawing of Kanye West. What we do know, though, is that Samsung can’t get away with another “meh” Galaxy S flagship: rival devices are just too good for Samsung to offer just minor improvements. We can’t wait to see what it comes up with.

What do you think? What’s missing from the Galaxy S5 that Samsung needs to sort?
